What is Nutrition Counseling?
What does a dietitian do?

Registered Dietitians must undergo rigorous academic training and experience requirements. They help people choose foods that best support their specific healthcare needs. In addition to helping you find a more balanced diet the role of nutrition counseling is to guide you through the world of evolving healthcare and nutrition information.

What will happen during my visit?

Charlene will begin by asking about your health and nutrition history. She will also want to learn more about your needs, any specific goals or answer any nutrition questions you may have.

Working together with Charlene you'll identify the most important and realistic goals for your needs and also look at any of the obstacles that may be standing in your way to optimum health. In addition to a plan, and in order to support your needs, you'll be provided with any number of resources including recipes, reading material, articles, book recommendations, names of good referral sources and cooking tips.

How many visits should I plan for?

The first visit will normally last up to 75 minutes and follow-up visits typically last between 30 minutes to an hour.

Although the number of visits depends on your needs, it is usually recommended that you come in up to 2-3 times. This will provide you with time to begin establishing healthful habits and for Charlene to support you as much as possible around any obstacles and also offer additional nutritional suggestions.

Will insurance cover nutrition counseling?

Many insurance plans cover nutrition counseling. They may refer to it as Medical Nutrition Therapy. In order to find out if your plan covers nutrition you will need to call your health insurance provider. For some insurance companies, a physician referral is needed. Be prepared to ask your provider if you're covered for nutrition counseling by a Registered Dietitian, how many visits you're allowed and if you need a referral. You may also want to ask about out of network benefits.
